Pilates is an exercise system that integrates the whole body and encourages freedom of movement and a reconnection with the body on a physical, mental and spiritual level. It can be performed on spring-assisted apparatus or a mat which often involves the use of small equipment.

Pilates identifies and seeks to address dysfunctional movement and postural patterns and the resulting muscular imbalances. It aims to release tight musculature and tissue which can occur over time due to daily habitual incorrect movement, injury and/or other physical, emotional and mental stresses.

Through elongating and stretching muscles, mobilising joints, increasing strength and core support and improving flexibility and range of movement, pilates re-educates and re-balances the body, specifically the musculo-skeletal structure, allowing it to move with ease, flow and optimum functionality. This release based approach to movement creates a sense of openness, lightness and space and helps you to experience a more thoughtful, versatile way of moving, encouraging you to move from within.

Who is it for?

Pilates is for everyone regardless of age and fitness levels. Children, men, women, the elderly, pre and post natal women, athletes, dancers and those with sedentary jobs.

What conditions can it help? Sports injuries, spinal conditions and disc issues, hip & knee replacements, auto-immune conditions such as MS, ME and Parkinsons, RSI, Arthritis, osteoporosis, digestive complaints and many more. It also improves performance in movement disciplines e.g. golf, skiing, tennis, dance etc

It is highly recommended by osteopaths, chiropractors, physiotherapists and general practitioners as one of the safest forms of exercise.
